# Blocks and layout

> Edit content blocks and the layouts that control their children.

A block is a slide section containing related elements. Select the block when a change should affect the complete section; select a child when only one element should change.

## Edit a block

    Open the presentation and turn on **Select Edit** in the editor toolbar.

  <Step title="Select the block">
    Select the outer boundary of the content section. If a child element is selected first, move up to its parent block.

  <Step title="Apply the change">
    Adjust its direction, alignment, padding, gaps, size, style, or child arrangement with the available controls.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review its children">
    Confirm that text, images, charts, tables, and spacing still fit inside the updated block.

<Tip>
  Select the smallest block that contains everything you intend to change. This keeps nearby slide content unaffected.
</Tip>

If a child snaps back after being moved, its parent layout is controlling the position. Adjust the parent layout or ungroup the content before positioning the child independently.
